Après-coups

In a sleeping house, women share their stories. Safely out of sight, they begin to loosen the painful knots that have bound their lives to those of their violent partners. The women remain anonymous as director Romane Garant-Chartrand foregrounds their suffering, especially the tragic effects of the normalization of their abuse. On the screen, the sadness conveyed in a hand gesture or the anxiety in a tapping foot could equally be that of a mother, a friend, or a sister, poisoned by shame and guilt. But within this refuge, frozen as if their lives were on hold, we discover above all the value of community and support. This gives them the courage they need to free themselves from the monster that never fully leaves them. (SC)
