New Visions Competition

In The Sweet Arms Julian Flavin

When night falls, director Julian Flavin hosts a radio show, pondering the meaning and scope, both latent and overt, of music. Guided by an enthralling voice and a camera that captures time suspended in the city at night, In The Sweet Arms shows music in its most unusual forms: a choir singing to those on their deathbeds, a U.S. Army rock group rehearsal, a superstar moved by the crowd during a concert, a teenager setting Call of Duty clips to music, an AI-generated song mimicking the band that the filmmaker once belonged to. These encounters probe the ideological, social and political dimensions of music and what it reveals about how we see the world. (AF)
