Exploring Nature - Nov 12 to Nov 18

maɬni – towards the ocean, towards the shore Sky Hopinka

Films A to Z

The first feature by Sky Hopinka, an experimental filmmaker of Ho-Chunk extraction, descended from the Pechanga tribe of the Luiseño Indians, this superb film/poem followed Sweetwater Sahme and Jordan Mercier, two Indigenous people from the Pacific Northwest. Each guides us through their world, sharing meditations on nature, the spirit world and the beyond. Spoken mainly in Chinook Wawa, a language that Hopinka studies and teaches, the film gravitates around the Chinookian origin of death myth, without revealing all its mysteries. With landscapes of dreamlike beauty and a captivating soundtrack, this journey, taking the form of musings on the importance of language and its associated beliefs, invites us to think about humanity’s place in this and other worlds.
