In Georgia’s Caucasus Mountains, hundreds of sheep slowly make their way forward, guided by a handful of shepherds and their dogs. The flock follows ancient routes shaped by the passage of bodies and by a memory passed down from generation to generation. Shot on 16 mm, the film traces this cycle over sixteen months, following the changing seasons and weather. The grain of the film blends with the sound of the breeze and the bells of the flock. As this age-old practice becomes increasingly precarious, these routes bear the traces of a body of knowledge passed down through generations, connecting people to the land and to one another. (NBB)
