Unveilling the 2024 program

News

After months of anticipation, we can finally present you with the complete program of films that will make up the 27th edition of the RIDM. From November 20 to December 1, no fewer than 146 documentary films from diverse horizons and a host of activities will be on offer. In addition to six exciting competitions, there will be world, Canadian and Quebec premieres, discussions with filmmakers, great festive moments and much more.

OFFICIAL COMPETITION

International Feature Competition

The International Feature Competition comprises eleven emerging works that that tap into the many possibilities of documentary.

 

National Feature Competition

The seven films in the National Feature Competition highlight the bold approaches of Quebec and Canadian filmmakers.

 

New Visions Competition

Ten films make up the New Visions competition, devoted to daring international and national first features.

 

Magnus-Isacsson Competition

In honour of this beloved Montreal documentary filmmaker, this competition brings together national films with a strong social conscience.

 

International Short and Medium-Length Competition


This year’s International Short and Medium-Length Competition features fifteen films. While some deal with a relationship of domination, others focus on the notion of mystery. Moreover, five films explore the notions of relationships and bonding.

National Short and Medium-Length Competition

This competition focuses on powerful testimonies and traumatic experiences. However, other films deal with nature, the environment and questions of identity. Several films take an experimental approach and explore the limits of cinematic narration.


PANORAMA

Essentials

The five films in the Essentiels section bring together new works from must-see filmmakers and as well as the most in demand films of the festival year.
 

Against the Grain

The four films in the Against the Grain section represent bold works that challenge our perception of the world and cinema.

Horizons

The seven films in this section offer unique journeys and universal stories: humanity in close-up.

Special screenings

Tsai Ming-liang's ABIDING NOWHERE invites us to reflect on the pace of modern life, once again embodying a walking monk in Washington D.C.

Then, co-presented by Tënk, the special screening FRAGMENTS D'UNE OEUVRE: LES FILMS DE JEANNINE GAGNÉ, will allow us to rediscover a filmmaker with an eclectic filmography. Two of Jeannine Gagné's works will be presented, followed by a discussion with her.

 

SPECIAL PROGRAMS


Focus Mexico: Light between the shadows

In collaboration with DocsMX, RIDM turns its gaze to Mexico, a country whose cinematography plunges us into the heart of a highly complex socio-political context. This program offers a human perspective on the multiple realities affecting this vast territory, illustrating a rich variety of perspectives and aesthetic approaches.

On November 23, a discussion entitled Territory crossed: perspectives on Mexican documentary will explore the reality of contemporary documentary filmmaking in this country. Hosted by filmmaker Nadine Gomez, it will bring together five participants of Focus Mexico.

 

Iva Radivojević : Imaginary Landscapes of Dislocation

For the past fifteen years, Iva Radivojević has been developing a radically independent cinematic approach with renewed rigour and originality. RIDM is honoring her work with a screening of her most recent film, WHEN THE PHONE RANG, as well as a selection of feature-length and short films. A discussion between the filmmaker and Jason Fox, publisher and founder of World Records, will take place on November 29.

 

Retrospective Carlos Ferrand and the Grupo de Cine Liberación sin Rodeos

The Grupo de Cine Liberación sin Rodeos (Liberation without Detours Film Group) was founded in 1972 in Cusco, Peru. Through cinematic explorations ranging from activism to a more impressionistic and fictional approach, the social and political intentions of Grupo de Cine Liberación sin Rodeos are unmistakable. The four films in this retrospective invite us to reflect on the relationship between social commitment and cinema.

Unframing Documentary: Diverse perspectives on different storytelling practices

This special program showcases documentary formats that employ diverse narrative practices beyond the realm of cinema. This year's program includes audiovisual performances, listening sessions, podcasts, panels and immersive works.

Doc-to-doc

Three Quebec women directors have been invited to program a documentary that inspired their creative process. Annie St-Pierre, Laurence Lévesque and Laurence Olivier will take part in Doc-to-doc, presented by Télé-Québec.

Discussion

On November 22, a panel entitled Between Reality and Dystopia with Marianna Milhorat (JUST ABOVE THE SURFACE OF THE EARTH (FOR A COMING EXTINCTION)) and Tobias Nölle (PREPARATIONS FOR A MIRACLE) proposes a cross-dialogue between two films which, with remarkable inventiveness, depict worlds both recognizable and distorted by environmental crises.

Wapikoni

In order to showcase the creativity of Indigenous artists and the importance of the issues they bring to light, RIDM and Wapikoni are joining forces again this year to present seven short films. These works will provide an opportunity to discover new voices and highlight the colossal work accomplished by Wapikoni, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.

 

Emerging Talent Day

On November 22, for the first time ever, a day devoted entirely to emerging filmmakers will be held, with the aim of introducing young filmmakers at the start of their careers to the workings of the documentary industry.

On the program: a networking brunch presented in collaboration with UQAM's École des médias, a master class with Kim O'Bomsawin co-presented by the PCCQ and a panel (by invitation).

To mark the tenth anniversary of the Soirée de la relève Radio-Canada, festival goers are invited to Emerging Talent Happy Hour at the Cinémathèque québécoise’s Salle Norman-McLaren for a friendly moment in the company of previous award winners.

 

Family Screenings

For the tenth time, RIDM is pleased to invit at the Cinémathèque québécoise

is pleased to invite the young and young at heart to Sunday morning screenings for the whole family, with the aim of introducing budding filmmakers to documentary-inspired cinema. Presented by Desjardins, two programs will be offered to young audiences.

Two programs will be on offer: First Sight, presented by lumière collective, will consist of experimental films followed by a creative critical reflection workshop. Then, Never Let Go! presented by the Carrousel international du film de Rimouski, is a selection of funny and awe-inspiring short films that will delight all generations.


RIDM LATE NIGHTS 


During the festival, RIDM’s Headquarters will come alive thanks to free concerts and DJ performances that are open to all.

 

AWARDS CEREMONY 

The awards ceremony will be held at the Cinémathèque québécoise’s Salle Norman-McLaren on November 30 at 5 p.m., during which 13 prizes will be handed out to the winning films of the 2024 selection.

The 27th edition of RIDM will take place from November 20 to December 1st, 2024

at the Cinémathèque québécoise, Cineplex Odéon Quartier Latin, Cinéma du Musée, Cinéma du Parc, Cinéma Moderne, National Film Board of Canada, BAnQ and Théâtre Outremont.
