Short and Medium-Length Competition

Avancer masqué Laurence Olivier

With Veiled Intent

Masked beings roam a snowy Natashquan, where the weather is hostile—but are their presence and intentions the same? They knock on people’s doors and wander the streets, all wearing strange, menacing masks. Thus camouflaged, their identity remains hidden. This unusual masquerade is actually an endangered custom: Mi-Carême, or Mid-Lent. Residents play at guessing who’s hiding under the disguises after inviting them into their homes. But here, somewhere between experimental cinema and horror film, the masks never fall. Avancer masqué draws on the eccentric, eerie nature of this little-known tradition to create an experience bordering on a nightmare. (AJL)

Laurence Olivier also programmed in the festival a Short horror documentary program as part of Doc-to-doc and will participate in a conversation with filmmaker Simon Plouffe.
