Focus Mexico : Light Between the Shadows

Earth Altars Sofía Peypoch

Through a work of great delicacy and formal, aesthetic modesty, director Sofía Peypoch executes a deeply moving shift, transforming her poetic and personal approach into an act of resistance. Although it’s become difficult to skirt the issues of violence and kidnapping that have plagued Mexico for decades, Peypoch looks deep into the earth, into the hollows of forests and the hearts of trees, to revive the memory of those we have tried to completely erase. The journey of her memories and the fear embedded in her body serve as the framework for her archaeological examination of the ground. Earth Altars questions our ability to understand and identify what the ground contains and turns historical traumas into a precious herbarium, a silent witness to what would otherwise be impossible to show.
