Mamá

Through a gentle, disarmingly frank dialogue with his mother Hilda, Tzotzil director Xun Sero gives us rare, precious insight into the women of his community. By noting their daily actions, Xun documents an age-old heritage and bears witness to a lineage marked by abuse to which women still fall victim. Hilda, "who is there despite everything," watches over her dead to keep the memory of those who raised her alive, good or bad. Xun records the traces left by a generational patriarchy that he confronts within himself. And for Hilda, the camera and sound become vital tools to make the voices of those who are still being silenced heard, bringing the documentary back to its most essential function: archiving. Mamá unfolds slowly, like a difficult life we try to tame, like a mother we hope to understand and protect. (NG)
