Malintzin 17
From either his window or balcony, Eugenio Polgovsky, with his 5-year-old daughter, observes the mundane activities of a quiet residential street in Mexico City through his camera. Overlooking the stage of this theatre of everyday life, a bird incubates an egg in its nest built among electric wires. Filmed by Eugenio less than a year before his untimely death as he entered his forties, these images were rediscovered by Mara Polgovsky, the filmmaker's sister and co-director of this posthumous film. Through her editing, she delicately draws a parallel between birds and the sensitive relationship between the filmmaker and his daughter, shown through conversations designed to incite her imagination. Offering moments of poetic observation, this minimalist film is a tribute to kind parenting. (HSB)
