Coltan is a strategic mineral used in the manufacture of new technologies. It is often presented as necessary for an energy transition, or even an ecological transformation of capitalism and is abundant in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This film uses the extraction of coltan in that country as its focal point to build an eloquent reflective dialogue between the legacy of the colonial past and the country's current reality. With remarkable political weight, the filmmaker artistically and symbolically reappropriates Belgian colonial archives on the various stages of the extraction of this mineral, exposing their extractivist nature in the process. Katasumbika (Coltan) presents the numerous impacts of this mining over the years and conveys multiple cultural elements that have been rendered invisible by colonialism and its contemporary manifestations. The film emerges as an important creative gesture of resistance and affirmation of essential narrative sovereignty. (HSB)
