Once a monument to Yugoslavia’s international ambitions, Belgrade’s Sava Centar is undergoing a radical transformation. As its vast interiors are dismantled, chairs, fixtures and fragments of its former life are removed by a new generation of young workers who have no personal memory of the country it once represented. Against these gestures of erasure, archival images briefly resurrect another time, allowing past and present to collide within the building’s changing spaces. With quiet precision and an attentive eye, Inventory contemplates the relationship between architecture, memory and political change, asking what remains of a collective past when its physical traces are taken apart.
