Nocturne for a Forest Catarina Vasconcelos

One of the most promising talents in Portuguese filmmaking, Catarina Vasconcelos (The Metamorphosis of Birds, RIDM 2020), returns to the festival with a short that mingles reality and allegory in a unique take on a centuries-old event. In Portugal in the 17th century, by order of Pope Gregory XV, monks built a wall around a forest and forbade women from entering. While the past cannot be changed, its retelling can evolve. The filmmaker reappropriates the forest, poetically reimagining it using the stories of the women who were deprived of their own existence. From this realm of souls emerges a deeply meaningful work tinged with humour, reminding us that we are all descendants of the witches who escaped the stake. (AAM)
