Carrie, a fictional character loosely based on her interpreter, co-writer Callie Hernandez, also known for her roles in La La Land and Under the Silver Lake, is plunged into an unusual investigation when she inherits a mysterious patent developed by her late father. Informed by documentary and autobiographical elements, this freely conceived drama flouts the fourth wall and perceptibly tricks genres to explore the complexity of grief. Filmed in a steamy 16mm that coexists with video archives of this fatherly doctor—whose reliability and credibility are questionable—Invention unfolds in a universe steeped in conspiracy, through a labyrinthine structure and an enigmatic atmosphere tinged with humour.
