Maia - Portrait avec mains

Filmmaker Alexandra Gulea's family history is intertwined with that of her people: the Aromanians, an ethnic group mostly settled in Albania, Greece, Bulgaria, and Romania. After her grandmother’s death in 1999, the filmmaker inherited a precious relic that had once belonged to her: a velvet dress. She films the dress as it moves past various landscapes, accompanied by a variety of technical and artistic techniques, creating an eclectic collage effect. Telling the story of previous generations, Maia – Portrait with Hands is an exemplary demonstration of the duty to preserve the memory of Aromanians, who continue to fight to have their identity and cultural rights recognized.
