After the death of the head of an underground betting operation in a blue-collar suburb of Buenos Aires, his mother and daughter take over the illict business. Adopting the first three lines of a nursery rhyme listing what you must wear to your wedding for good luck, Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed deftly materializes, with humour, these three elements in the work's design process. Weaving a narrative based on the real-life family archives of his neighbours, who play “their parts” for the occasion, the filmmaker creates with them an inventive gangster film that mocks the boundaries between documentary and fiction. The film successfully blends images from many sources and formats, exploring with originality and emotion the professional and personal tensions of this bereaved family, while tackling notions of responsibility, memory, and truth.
