Short and Medium-Length Competition

Break no.1 & Break no.2 Lei Lei

Lei Lei's cinema is a universe inhabited by images of the past. He harnesses the power of art in all his attempts to recreate, capture, and preserve memory. In Break no.1 and Break no.2, two mysterious narratives, separated by credits in the middle of the film, are told through a combination of retro and dreamlike images and sound effects. Vintage lamps are filmed from incongruous angles, VHS tapes are destroyed, and people and places are captured on coloured film. The stylistic devices and subjects evoke various film eras with playfulness and mastery, creating both a timeless aura and the impression of witnessing someone else's dreams. (AJL)
