History is Written at Night Alejandro Alonso Estrella

History is Written at Night

In the darkness of a gigantic blackout, nightlife comes alive in mystical forms. In the streets, residents try to escape the gloom, while the bonfires seem to herald the end of an era. Thanks to chiaroscuro lighting powered by flashlights, car headlights and torches, the rupture caused by darkness is defined by an unsettling lyricism. Poetic and perceptive, History is Written at Night offers a weighty, measured atmospheric work as the sound of sirens, thunder and turmoil intermingle and merge with the confessions of the filmmaker's mother, who recounts a vision that has haunted her for years. The collective destiny of the Cuban people patiently takes shape until dawn. (MF)
