The Silence of Iron
Since the beginning of the colonization of Brazil, mining has helped shape the identity of the state of Minas Gerais. This industrial activity has transformed the region, even wiping out entire mountains and leaving a deep imprint on the people who live there. Spurred by the memory of a childhood punctuated by the noises of factory sirens and trains carrying ore, two personal narratives set against a backdrop of archival films and impressionistic reconstructions explore the impact of this shared heritage. The Silence of Iron is a work carved from a poetic and political alloy that questions the promises of progress made by a dominant industrial activity with diverse economic, social, and environmental impacts.
