International Short and Medium-Length Competition

Time to Change Pocas Pascoal

In lush Angola, the Portuguese colonizer emerges like a parasite. Under the merciless yoke of the all-powerful white man, nature and mankind are quickly tamed. Colonization, like a forced and destructive transplant, leads to ruin, desolation, and the enslavement of fauna, flora and humans. In Time to Change, filmmaker Pocas Pascoal needs only a few minutes to produce a staggering documentary essay depicting an annihilating force nothing can resist, bringing its entire environment to heel. The editing reveals the violence of archive images while the sound design underlines the dissonance and devastation wrought by colonialism and capitalism on our natural world. (MB)
