International Short and Medium-Length Competition

Quebrante Janaina Wagner

A symbol of the over-reaching ambitions of Brazil's military dictatorship in the 70s, the colossal, unfinished Trans-Amazonian Highway stretches through the Amazon rainforest like a gaping scar, embodying so-called progress with destructive footprints. In Rurópolis, the first village built along this artery, a retired teacher takes us on a sensory exploration of the region's caves and rocks. Navigating between poetry and history, between scientific theories and popular culture, Quebrante shows a refreshing freedom of experimentation to weave an unexpected link between the minerals buried underground in this community and celestial bodies like the moon.
