A Hundred Years From Now gathers the traces of a grieving process yet to be experienced. First, there is the grief surrounding filmmaker Arijit Debnath’s mother as her memory deteriorates and she passes from Parkinson’s disease. Then, there is an awakening and a renewed feeling of affirmation of the filmmaker’s Bengali-Canadian cultural identity. Personal testimonies intertwine with a dense and meditative visual exploration that combines Bangla cinema (by Satyajit Ray), songs, poetry (by Rabindranath Tagore) and literature. Within these refined compositions and cadences, frame-by-frame animation, rotoscoping, pages of books, photo albums, choppy silhouettes and deconstructed images of films all tangle together to create a delicate goodbye to the filmmaker’s mother.
