Haralez : Les débuts bruyants du berceau
In this poetic essay connecting Istanbul’s colonial urban planning with Armenian mythology, Chantal Partamian tells the story of the Haralez, spirit-dogs capable of travelling between life and death, whose presence can still be felt in various places and traces of the Turkish metropolis. At the heart of the film is the former Surp Hagop Armenian cemetery, now hidden beneath Gezi Park, one of the city’s most contested spaces. Partamian draws on a rich array of archival materials and takes an engaged approach to reflect on memory, erasure and the persistence of histories the city has tried to bury but that continue to haunt it. Blending personal narrative with ancestral myth, Haralez transforms the urban landscape into a palimpsest where the dead refuse to disappear. (CD)
