Using imperfect images of an old, nearly worn out point-and-shoot camera, a partial account of U.S.-funded development projects in northeast Thailand emerges from the remnants of an exhausted archive. In Sum skillfully combines archival footage with a speculative narrative device voiced by the camera itself to deliver a tactile essay rich in possibilities for reflection. By repurposing the images and emphasizing their deterioration, the film intertwines reflections on machine memory with a critique of American imperialism. Suspended between remembrance and forgetting, the film’s cinematic and archival gestures begin to falter as they attempt to reconstruct and represent a chapter of Thai history that resists its own erasure.
