In the wake of Ronald Reagan’s victory in the 1980 presidential election, over 2,000 women gathered and surrounded the Pentagon. This movement, known as the Women’s Pentagon Action, denounced the neoliberal policies and military rearmament proposed by the elected government. Through an act of reuse, Panayotova reconstructs the event and its energy, bringing together the images, words and songs created there. With Love and Rage blends essay and pamphlet to celebrate the eloquence with which these activists articulated a vision that intimately connects environmental and social justice to women’s bodies and experiences. Exploring the intersections that shaped the ecofeminist movement at the time, this medium-length film speaks just as loudly to the present, as the alarming resurgence of conservatism that threatens the rights won by previous generations of women.
