A conversation between the filmmaker’s kokum and mother guides the audiovisual presentation of six generations of their family belonging to the matriarchal Paul First Nation. The rhythm of the words transects layers of history as they peel away, allowing us to see the layers of bark cut and harvested by their great-great-granddaughter. Visual explorations with colours, double-vision and superimposed images, and experimental sounds pair with the actions of the protagonists and the images filmed on the community’s territory. A Nêhiyaw cultural archive, this family narration tells the intimate story of the consequences of colonization in the context of a history of systemic violence. (SCV)
