In one of the film’s opening images, filmmaker Elham Ehsas presents a photograph taken in 1988 in which he identifies Abdul Ahad Momand, the only Afghan to have journeyed into space. Momand is then being interviewed by a reporter, the filmmaker’s father. Drawing on archives from multiple sources, Ehsas reconstructs the story of this now-forgotten contribution to space exploration, weaving a connection between the fate of this astronaut and the history of his own family, who were forced to flee their country during the civil war, along with more than a million others. Evoking family and national memories, Forgotten Spaceman offers a compelling historical reflection on Afghanistan, the impact of colonialism, the erasure of history and the realities of exile. (HSB)
