A box of videotapes containing footage of the Second Intifada, as it occurred in the heart of Bab al-Zawiya in the town of Hebron/Al-Khalil in the West Bank, resurfaces after remaining hidden for over twenty years. By engaging with this starkly clear material—and through the process of viewing, analyzing, digitizing, presenting and assembling it—filmmaker Shayma’ Awawdeh, on the one hand, begins a voice-over phone conversation with her mother about remembering, forgetting and the defence mechanism of forgetting. On the other hand, at the edge of the fathomable and the unfathomable, the filmmaker’s own childhood memories under Israeli occupation at ages six and eight reemerge. With admirable grace, Shayma’ Awawdeh honours her own childhood, the places that shaped and that endure, and the other children of Hebron: their courage, their light, their great dignity. (RS)
*Some scenes contain graphic images of children in severe distress and of death that may be difficult to see.
