An Iranian filmmaker follows the work of Palestinian cinematographer Hani Jawharieh as the violence he has been observing from a distance, through archival images, reaches Tehran following Israel’s announcement of an attack on Iran. Forced to leave the city with his family, he finds himself caught between plight and survival. Over twelve days of uncertainty and displacement, the film transforms into a fractured visual diary, moving between archival material, violent news footage, personal recordings and moments of silence. Nassaj’s film project, which begins with archival footage tracing the history of Israeli violence against Palestinians, suddenly turns inward, becoming an intimate inquiry into personal fear, exile, memory and the ethics of witnessing. As the distance between filmmaker and subject, past and present steadily dissolves, Fruits of Despair confronts the fragile boundary between observing and experiencing. (ME)
