Cuban-trained Haitian filmmaker Feguenson Hermogène retraces a history connecting the two countries. Amid agricultural landscapes, a Cuban family of Haitian descent keeps alive the traditions and beliefs that preserve the memory of their ancestors, paying homage to Erzulie, a major figure in Haitian Vodou. Rituals, incantations, dances and dreamlike apparitions form a world where the dead live alongside the living. This brings to light the history of the exploitation of Haitian workers, some of whom died on sugar plantations in the early 20th century. The camera moves into the heart of the ceremonies, where bodies, landscapes and natural light reveal their warmth. Blending memory, spirituality and music, Far Away explores the enduring presence of a cultural heritage deeply rooted in the Caribbean. (MAS)
